US junk removal pricing: truck, weight, and regional costs

A factual breakdown of what US junk removal costs, how truck-volume pricing works, what the same pickup costs across major US cities, and why landfill cost per kilogram is only one small part of a retail quote.

Quick answer: national price benchmarks

HomeAdvisor's current US cost guide reports a $241 average junk removal job, a typical range of $133-$372, and a broader range of $60-$700 for most projects. It places a full truckload at roughly $600-$800. These are consumer-market benchmarks, not fixed prices from one hauler.

Labor, travel, landfill fees, item type, access, and the usable size of the operator's truck all change the quote. Use national figures as a screening range, then compare local quotes with the same item list and access conditions.

Cost by truck volume

HomeAdvisor publishes the following consumer ranges. Cubic-yard bands are approximate because truck bodies and each company's definition of a load fraction differ.

  • 1/8 truck, approximately 2-3 yd3: $75-$125
  • 1/4 truck, approximately 3-4.5 yd3: $125-$200
  • 1/2 truck, approximately 4.5-11 yd3: $200-$400
  • 3/4 truck, approximately 11-13 yd3: $400-$600
  • Full truck, approximately 13-17 yd3: $600-$800

As a physical reference, 1-800-GOT-JUNK describes a 400 ft3 truck. Dividing that body evenly gives 50 ft3 per 1/8 load, 100 ft3 per quarter load, and 200 ft3 per half load. That arithmetic describes space, not a guaranteed item count.

Volume is not weight. A truck full of sofas can occupy the same volume as construction debris while weighing far less. Never convert a truck fraction into kilograms without an actual scale weight or a defensible material-density estimate.

Regional price check: same items, major cities

We checked LoadUp's public instant-pricing system on August 22, 2026 using the same basket and conditions across 15 representative US metropolitan ZIP codes: one couch or loveseat, one queen mattress, indoor pickup, no stairs, no disassembly, and a full-day service window for August 24, 2026. No contact details were entered and no booking was created.

The Atlanta baseline matches LoadUp's own published ZIP 30312 example: $59 area fee, $30 couch, and $35 queen mattress. By comparison, dense East Coast and West Coast metro areas (New York, Boston, and San Francisco) range between $209 and $219—up to 76% higher than Atlanta—driven primarily by elevated dispatch area fees, higher commercial operating overhead, and state-mandated mattress recycling fees.

These are city examples, not regional averages. They demonstrate how one national provider changes the same job by ZIP. Prices can change with service date, outdoor placement, stairs, same-day service, promotions, and the actual items presented at pickup.

Cost per pound and per kilogram

For ordinary household junk, national junk removal services generally quote by item or volume, not by kilogram. Weight pricing is more relevant to transfer stations, landfills, and dense material such as concrete, soil, roofing, or demolition debris.

The Environmental Research & Education Foundation's 2025 landfill tipping-fee analysis surveyed 350 US municipal solid waste landfills. Its unweighted gate-fee averages convert as follows.

EREF regionLandfill fee / short tonFee / lbFee / kg
Northeast$80.26$0.0401$0.0885
Pacific$75.51$0.0378$0.0832
Midwest$68.75$0.0344$0.0758
Southeast$55.03$0.0275$0.0607
Mountains / Plains$53.69$0.0268$0.0592
South Central$50.52$0.0253$0.0557
United States$64.48$0.0322$0.0711

The conversion uses 1 short ton = 2,000 lb = 907.1847 kg. At the national average, 500 kg of ordinary municipal solid waste represents about $35.55 in landfill gate fees. In the Northeast it is about $44.25; in South Central states it is about $27.85.

The per-kilogram figures are the landfill's charge to accept waste at the gate, not a retail pickup price. They exclude the crew, truck, fuel, travel, loading, sorting, insurance, administration, minimum trip charge, and company margin. A consumer cannot estimate a full-service pickup by multiplying weight by the landfill rate alone.

The detailed cost structure

A transparent estimate should show which of these components are included:

  1. 1.Base trip or area fee: dispatch, route, vehicle, fuel, support, and the minimum cost of sending a crew.
  2. 2.Loading labor: crew count and time inside the property, including long carries.
  3. 3.Item or volume charge: individual pieces or the fraction of usable truck space occupied.
  4. 4.Disposal and processing: landfill gate fee, transfer station, recycling, donation, or sorting cost.
  5. 5.Access: stairs, elevator booking, restricted loading zones, or difficult dismantling.
  6. 6.Material surcharge: mattresses, tires, refrigerant appliances, electronics, heavy debris, or regulated waste.
  7. 7.Schedule adjustment: same-day, weekend, narrow time window, or cancellation terms.

Retail quote: base trip fee + loading labor + item or volume charge + disposal or processing + access and material surcharges - discounts.

Weight-only disposal estimate: measured weight in kg x regional landfill fee per kg. This second calculation estimates only the facility gate charge.

How to get a comparable quote

Send every company the same scope

  • List every large item and estimate the number of bags or boxes
  • Add clear photos of each room, pile, and access route
  • State the floor, stairs, elevator, parking distance, and loading restrictions
  • Separate dense debris from furniture and general household material
  • Ask for the truck's usable cubic-yard capacity and the fraction being quoted
  • Ask whether labor, fuel, disposal, taxes, and sweeping are included
  • Ask which items trigger separate disposal or disassembly fees
  • Get the final price before loading starts when onsite pricing is used

If a company quotes a fraction without naming its truck capacity, ask for cubic yards. A half load on a 12 yd3 truck is not the same service volume as a half load on a 17 yd3 truck.
