Toronto disposal guide

How to dispose of a mattress in Toronto

Check your property's collection arrangement before paying for mattress removal. If you are considering drop-off instead, confirm the designated depot and its current charge before loading a vehicle.

Routes for your mattress

Collection. Toronto lists mattresses as oversized items. Apartments and condos should confirm the building's designated collection area.

Drop-off. The City lists Commissioners and Dufferin for residential mattress drop-off; commercial mattress loads are excluded. Check current fees and preparation rules.

Donation. Habitat ReStore GTA lists mattresses and box springs as not accepted. Furniture Bank considers stain-free, gently used mattresses; request an assessment before arranging transport.

Check the organisation’s current requirements for your item before arranging a collection or drop-off.

Describe the complete bed removal

List the mattress separately from the box spring, frame and headboard. Include its size, condition and location in the property. A request described only as a bed can leave the provider guessing about both the load and the work.

Check whether a new-mattress retailer offers an old-item collection service under your order, and ask about its exclusions. This guide has not verified individual retailer offers, so do not assume collection is included in delivery.

Compare collection with transporting it yourself

A depot trip requires suitable transport and safe loading as well as an accepted destination. Compare that effort with your building or household collection arrangements before assuming drop-off is the simpler choice.

The route summary above identifies the designated mattress depots. Verify opening hours and the current schedule on the linked City pages. Do not use the general garbage fee as a substitute for the mattress category or mistake a deposit for the final charge.

Tell the collector about condition

If there is a suspected infestation, report that before anyone agrees to handle the mattress. Follow the City's specific preparation instructions for that condition; ordinary and infested mattresses are not prepared identically. Avoid offering a contaminated mattress for reuse.

Donation is not a guaranteed fallback. A charity accepting some furniture may reject all mattresses. ReStore excludes mattresses, while Furniture Bank considers stain-free, gently used ones. Ask the specific organisation to assess yours before arranging collection.

When indoor removal is the missing service

The need may be lifting rather than a lack of disposal routes. Explain whether the mattress is inside a bedroom, downstairs, in a lift-access building or already in the approved collection area. Ask who supplies any protective covering and whether stairs or additional bed components change the quote.

Try the Toronto disposal finder for a situation-specific comparison. For a larger move, use the apartment removal guide to organise access and the rest of the load.

Our sources & how we check them

We compare published City of Toronto rules with each organisation’s acceptance policy. The finder helps you choose what to check next; it does not reserve a pickup or confirm acceptance.
