Toronto disposal guide

How to dispose of a washing machine in Toronto

Separate three decisions: whether the washer can be reused, who will make it ready to move, and who will transport it. Confirm each part before booking removal.

Routes for your washing machine

Collection. Appliances appear in Toronto's oversized and metal collection guidance. Confirm property eligibility and the current preparation requirements.

Drop-off. Large appliances appear in the City's metal drop-off category. Confirm the depot, load restrictions and current metal fee before travelling.

Donation. Habitat ReStore GTA considers appliances subject to acceptance. Disclose faults, age and condition; a working machine is not automatically accepted.

Check the organisation’s current requirements for your item before arranging a collection or drop-off.

Establish whether the machine is suitable for reuse

Record the make, model, approximate age, dimensions and known faults. Supply clear photographs if requesting a donation assessment. Describe leaks, missing parts or an incomplete cycle rather than calling the machine working simply because it powers on.

Compare any confirmed donation arrangement with removal offered by the replacement retailer. Obtain the terms directly; neither availability nor acceptance by a particular retailer is verified by this guide.

Agree who makes the washer ready to move

Ask whether disconnection and preparation are included in the service. Do not assume that a hauler is providing plumbing or electrical work. If you are unsure about safe disconnection, arrange appropriate professional help and follow the manufacturer's instructions.

Tell the collector if this is a stacked installation, an integrated unit or a laundry pair. Accessing a washer beneath another appliance can be a different job from collecting a freestanding machine beside the door.

Match the destination to the access arrangement

For an apartment, ask management about the designated appliance area, elevator protection and booking requirements. For any property, describe stairs, narrow doorways and the distance to parking. Do not move a heavy appliance alone just to qualify for a different collection option.

The route summary links to municipal collection, depot and donation sources. It distinguishes the destination's conditions from the separate work needed to carry the machine there.

Request a complete appliance-removal quote

Confirm whether the price covers just the washer or additional equipment, and identify any disconnection, carrying, transport and destination charges. Ask what happens if the proposed donation is declined. A reuse request should not leave the final disposal destination unresolved.

Use the Toronto disposal finder before deciding on a route. If you also have a sofa or mattress, the local item guides help separate their requirements instead of treating a mixed load as one material.

Our sources & how we check them

We compare published City of Toronto rules with each organisation’s acceptance policy. The finder helps you choose what to check next; it does not reserve a pickup or confirm acceptance.
