Organiser, mover or removal company: who should you hire first?

Choose help around the decisions, belongings and destination involved in a move or clearout.

Start with the decision that is holding things up

If you still need to decide what stays, an organising professional may help you sort categories, set up a workable system and prepare a decision process. Agree the approach, confidentiality and which decisions remain yours. NAPO publishes a professional directory and hiring guidance; relevant experience matters alongside any training.

When a move involves downsizing or coordinating several stages, a move manager may be another role to consider. NASMM maintains a directory of its members. Ask which parts of sorting, packing, coordinating and settling in the individual actually provides before expecting one person to handle the whole project.

Separate the belongings that are moving from those leaving

A household mover transports the belongings you intend to keep. A removal company collects the items you have agreed to let go. Mark the groups clearly and resolve undecided or protected items before a hauling crew starts loading.

For a US interstate household move, FMCSA’s checklist includes checking registration and getting written documents, inventory and liability information. Its interstate guidance should not be treated as the licensing rule for every local move or another country.

Write one handover brief between the roles

List protected items, destinations, access arrangements, who can approve a change and the point at which each role takes over. Ask who will arrange donation acceptance, packing, lifting and transport. A charity directory entry does not mean your item has been accepted or a pickup booked.

Use Jenexo for removal help after defining the items and access. For organisers and move managers, use the official directories below, then speak directly with the professional about the project. These are editorial resources, not paid listings or a guarantee of availability.

Compare the work you need at this stage

Ask what the fee covers, whether other companies are subcontracted, how extra time or items are approved and what records you receive. Get sorting assistance, transport and disposal responsibilities separately in writing. One contact may coordinate several roles, but the agreed scope should still show who performs each part.

Put your plan into practice

Look through relevant profiles and send the same project details to the professionals you contact.
